Valletta Cruise Port operators of the Valletta Waterfront and the Valletta passenger terminals is sponsoring the Alive 2018 Cycling Challenge for Cancer for the fourth consecutive year.
The ALIVE Charity Foundation is the first charity foundation to raise funds for medical research in Malta. In the first five years of operation this Foundation donated over €500,000 towards Cancer Research and Cancer Care. The sponsored research has already resulted in ground-breaking discoveries enabling a more efficient identification of cancers to provide specific treatment. Funds from the first two years were directed towards Breast Cancer Research, whilst the funds from the consecutive two years have been directed towards Children’s Cancer Research. ALIVE is now funding treatment research which is leading to more effective and sustainable cancer treatment.
‘The ALIVE Cycling Challenge will help fund related scientific research and awareness with long term impacts. Valletta Cruise Port is delighted to support such a worthy cause year-on-year as part of Valletta Cruise Port’s ongoing commitment to our community. Cancer is a fight that we must team up against, and the initiatives that the ALIVE challenge is supporting are tackling the root causes through targeted research,’ said Stephen Xuereb, CEO of Valletta Cruise Port and COO of Global Ports Holding.
The challenge consists of 29 cyclists participating in a gruelling cycling event between 19th and 28th July 2018, cycling from Vienna to Milan, through Salzburg, Brenner Pass and Lake Garda.
To prepare for such a challenge, all the participating cyclists must undergo an intensive 17-week training programme, starting with four sessions covering a total of 160km per week, building up to six sessions covering a total of 450-500km per week.
