Valletta Waterfront supports the LifeCycle Challenge Malta 2025

4 November 2025

2,000 km in 10 days to raise funds for renal patients

Valletta Waterfront is proudly supporting the LifeCycle Challenge Malta 2025, organised by the LifeCycle Malta Foundation — a gruelling endurance cycling challenge that this year will take participants from Petra in Jordan to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, covering approximately 2,000 kilometres in just 10 days.

This year’s route will see a team of dedicated cyclists traverse dramatic desert terrain, coastal roads along the Red Sea, and historic landscapes such as AlUla, Tabuk and Khaybar, all in the name of raising funds and awareness for individuals living with renal failure. The team will depart Malta on 13 November and return on 28 November, taking on some of the most demanding cycling conditions imaginable — from intense desert heat to long-distance endurance riding.

Stephen Xuereb, COO of Global Ports Holding and CEO of Valletta Cruise Port, operators of Valletta Waterfront, expressed continued support for this noble cause, “It is truly inspiring to see the determination and commitment of these cyclists as they tackle such extreme conditions for a worthy cause. Covering 2,000 kilometres across challenging terrain in just 10 days demonstrates immense stamina, both physical and mental. Their dedication helps shine a light on the struggles faced by kidney patients — a condition that affects around one in ten people in Malta. We are proud to support an initiative that transforms endurance and teamwork into tangible help for those who need it most.”

Founded in 1999, the LifeCycle Malta Foundation raises funds and awareness for renal health, supporting patients in Malta and Gozo through initiatives such as the TRACCIA software system for donor-recipient matching, dialysis equipment, patient transport and kidney disease research in collaboration with the University of Malta’s Research, Innovation & Development Trust (RIDT). Over the years, the Foundation has raised close to €4 million in aid of renal patients.

1 September 2025

SiGMA Euro-Med 2025 officially opened its doors in Malta on Monday, 1st September, welcoming thousands of delegates from across the globe to the Mediterranean’s leading iGaming and tech summit. The first day was bright and colourful, as the event struck an appropriate balance between wellness, culture, networking and recognition, giving delegates every opportunity to settle in and establish connections.

On the first morning of the summit, delegates and locals participated in the Wellness Morning on the panoramic Valletta Waterfront, organised by Gaming Malta and sponsored by Valletta Cruise Port and led by professional coaches from SportMalta. From 07:30hrs to 10:30hrs, delegates participated in sessions across wellness and fitness activities – with a focus on aerobics, guided stretching, and cardio, while enjoying healthy snacks and refreshments on the Valletta Waterfront promenade in Malta’s Grand Harbour.

The event was completely free, and a voluntary donation was encouraged, with all donations directed to the SiGMA Foundation’s school-building projects in Africa and the Richmond Foundation’s work in mental health advocacy. The spirit of the wellness morning was one of inclusion, with a further emphasis on team building among colleagues, as well as an essential message raising awareness of psychological and physical well-being.

Valletta Cruise Port was also generous in its sponsorship of the event, donating resources and hosting the event on the Valletta waterfront for the benefit of the greater community.

“As operators of Valletta Waterfront, we believe in creating spaces that bring people together, not just for leisure, but for purpose. Supporting initiatives like this one, which blend wellness, community, and meaningful impact, aligns perfectly with our values. We are proud to have hosted an event that not only celebrated movement and inclusivity, but also contributed to causes as vital as education for underserved communities and the promotion of mental well-being. Our thanks go to all the stakeholders and participants who made this day truly special,” commented Stephen Xuereb, COO Global Ports Holding and CEO Valletta Cruise Port.

This statement encapsulated the spirit of the morning: a celebration of movement, community, and collective contribution to causes that extend well beyond the gaming sector.

Valletta Cruise Port organises coastal cleanup

4 October 2024

Close to a tonne of waste picked up in a few hours

In a teambuilding activity organised by Valletta Cruise Port management and personnel, close to a tonne of waste has been picked up from the inner Grand Harbour area in the area known as Il-Menqa in Marsa, a hugely industrial marine area.

Waste picked up in a couple of hours comprised of nylon tackle and cable ties, polystyrene, PVC, polypropylene, polyethylene and polyurethane with a mix of sponges, detergent and oil bottles, pipes, cables, insulation material, varied disposables, and mixed waste.

This event was organised by Valletta Cruise Port in collaboration with the Coast is Clear voluntary organisation and Times of Malta. Coast is Clear has in the last years, has been cleaning the seas around Malta and Gozo, bringing together various entities to organise land and sea clean ups around the Maltese Islands, and planting trees to make Malta greener.

There is an estimated 75 to 199 million tons of plastic waste currently in our oceans, with a further 12 million tons of plastic entering the marine environment every single year. 70% of the debris left behind by humans sinks into the ocean’s ecosystem, 15% floats, and 15% lands on beaches. Plastic decomposes very slowly, breaking into tiny pieces known as microplastics, which endanger marine life, also entering the food chain, often to humans. Many sea creatures including marine birds, fish, turtles and whales die because of the plastic that’s suffocating our seas, with plastic debris getting lodged in coral and sea meadows. Without a global response, there could be more plastic in the sea than fish by 2050.

Stephen Xuereb, COO of Global Ports Holding and CEO of Valletta Cruise Port commented, “We would like to commend the various initiatives taken by Coast is Clear over the last years. As a Mediterranean nation, and as a leisure port, our livelihood and wellbeing depend on the sea. I am proud of our personnel for coming together on this initiative, and working hard to collect as many waste as possible. This is a small effort taken over a couple of hours, which we intend to repeat annually. As companies and individuals, we can help by making critical business and lifestyle changes from consuming less plastic to disposing of our waste with care thinking about the classic 5 Rs – Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose and Recycle. Our collective and cumulative action is powerful and can help to save our seas and oceans.”

“Malta’s coastal waters deserve much more respect and care,” said Mark Galea Pace from the Coast is Clear Foundation. “Not only is it our duty to protect marine life for future generations, but it is also Malta’s most valuable natural asset, attracting Maltese and foreigners alike. Clean up collaborations like these, enhance our enthusiasm and strength to keep combating plastic pollution. Our children deserve a healthier and cleaner planet. Let’s share the awareness and be the change.”

Valletta Cruise Port Social Club Organizes Lunch Event for Elderly Patients of Mount Carmel Hospital

28 April 2023

The Valletta Cruise Port Social Club recently organized a heartwarming lunch event for elderly service users and a team of healthcare workers from Mount Carmel Hospital at Browns Restaurant, located at the Valletta Waterfront. The event was aimed at providing a unique and enjoyable experience for patients and carers working in the social and recreational centre of this hospital.

Social isolation and loneliness can be common among older adults receiving treatment in institutions, often due to decreased mobility, low motivation and limited access to community-based recreational activities. Therefore, events like these can provide a much-needed break from the daily routines of these elderly persons and offer them a chance to socialize and enjoy themselves. In addition, it is important to acknowledge and appreciate the selfless service of the workers who tirelessly devote themselves to taking care of the elderly.

The Valletta Cruise Port Social Club, which is committed to social responsibility and community involvement, was eager to host the event. Speaking about the event, Stephen Xuereb, COO of Global Ports Holding and CEO of Valletta Cruise Port, expressed his satisfaction, stating that, “We are delighted to have the opportunity to support our local community and show our appreciation to those who provide care for our senior patients at Mount Carmel Hospital. It was a remarkable event, and we felt honored to have the privilege of giving back to these exceptional individuals.”

The healthcare workers who attended this event expressed their appreciation for the gesture and emphasized the significance of community engagement. Catherine Galea, who is the allied health services manager of the mental health services, commented that it is proven that opportunities for social interaction provide psychological benefits. Such activities lower rates of anxiety and depression, lead to greater empathy and facilitate the development of more trusting and cooperative relationships. Hence, the social and recreational team under the occupational therapy management, support and promote service users’ participation in such events. “Our service users greatly appreciated this event and highly praised the dignifying and exceptional service provided. The food was excellent and the atmosphere was wonderful. They felt that it reduced their stress, enhanced their mood and improved their self-esteem. “

The lunch event was a success, with the senior patients and Mount Carmel employees enjoying a delicious meal and spending a pleasant afternoon surrounded by the picturesque setting of Valletta Waterfront. Valletta Cruise Port gives back to local children’s homes

22 November 2017

Earlier this year, personnel at Valletta Cruise Port Plc raised funds and carried out voluntary work for two children’s homes – Dar Sagra Familja in Zabbar and St Rita Home in Tarxien – as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.

Employees renovated part of the dining room at Dar Sagra Familja to a recreational and creative corner including shelving, seating, parquet flooring and a small book library. One of the walls was painted with a colourful mural by local visual artist Raisa Busuttil on a voluntary basis. A water filtration system was also donated to the Zabbar home.

Sister Denise Vassallo, the house mother of Dar Sagra Familja said, “The dining room is the heart of the home, where children spend most of their indoor time – be it doing homework, studying or leisure activities. Raisa’s mural brought new life to the area, and fills you with a sense of warmth and belonging. Our heartfelt thanks to Valletta Cruise Port for making this project come together.”

Additionally, the company helped Tarxien’s St Rita Home in redesigning the bathrooms to meet the needs of the young adults living in the residential care. The bathroom also included a washroom facility. Valletta Cruise Port Plc procured all necessary bathroom materials and finishing hardware, and partly financed the required labour works.

“We would like to thank Valletta Cruise Port for the great help you gave us to refurnish the children’s bathrooms, and for your kind donation. Thank you for your generosity. Always in our prayers,” said Sister Judith Busuttil, house mother at St Rita Home.

Challenging Global Run Valletta raises a toast for Valletta, funds for Puttinu Cares

30 October 2016

More than 1,000 runners and walkers from Malta and overseas descended in Valletta on Sunday 30th October and discovered the storybook side of a majestic capital that is marking the 450th birthday in 2016, as part of the Global Run Valletta (GRV).

Organised by Global Ports Holding – the world’s largest cruise port operator – the event featured a 10K and a 5K run, as well as a 5K walk that spliced through the stony grandeur of the peninsular city and took off from the magnificent Valletta Waterfront.

The fifth edition of the increasingly popular Global Run series, held in Malta for the first time, built on the successes of the previous four runs – three in the port city of Bodrum (Turkey) and one in Kotor (Montenegro). The Malta event firmly established the series as a Global Ports Holding hallmark celebrating the confluence of tourism and active lifestyle.

This global outlook of the company, owing to its international operations and outreach, was reflected at the Global Run Valletta which ended up attracting over 200 foreigners from 49 countries. The rest of the more than 900 participants were Maltese whose enthusiasm to support the chosen NGO of the Global Ports Holding – Puttinu Cares – ran so high that registrations had to be stopped a week in advance of the race. Puttinu Cares works to support the families and relatives of children battling cancer.

Volunteers Join Forces for Coastal Cleanup Day

19 September 2016

A group of volunteers took part in a cleanup effort on the rocky beach of Exiles Bay in Sliema as part of International Coastal Cleanup Day.

The team of volunteers consisted of crew members on board the Carnival Vista cruise ship during her call at Valletta, and employees from Valletta Cruise Port plc with support from the Beach Cleansing Unit within the Cleansing Directorate.

The event was organized by Carnival Cruise Line to mark International Coastal Cleanup Day, the world’s largest single day cleanup event spearheaded by the Ocean Conservancy. Teams from many of the cruise line’s ships participated in similar cleanup activities in different parts of the world.

Every year thousands of tons of garbage winds up in the oceans, with 60% being composed of plastic material. Plastics especially last a very long time in the ocean, and are in such abundance that there are 46,000 individual pieces of plastic litter for every square mile of ocean. Plastics are very hazardous to marine life, killing more than a million birds and over 100,000 seals, turtles, and whales.

In a statement, Carnival Cruise Line said, “Our Carnival Vista team is delighted to be supporting this initiative by helping to clean the beach in Sliema in coordination with Valletta Cruise Port and the local Beach Cleansing Unit. We have enjoyed visiting Malta for the past months during our summer Mediterranean cruise program and it gives us great pleasure to give back to this beautiful destination.”

“We are proud to support this global environmental initiative, in cooperation with Carnival Cruise Line and the local Cleansing Directorate, whilst placing Malta on the international map of promoting a clean coastal environment. Coastal Cleanup Day should be every day. We all have a stake in clean oceans, and it is the responsibility of every individual to do their part to help keep the seas trash-free and maintain a sustainable marine life,” commented Stephen Xuereb, CEO of Valletta Cruise Port plc and COO of Global Ports Holding.

“Valletta Cruise Port is proud to be supporting such a prestigious global event. It is meaningful that such an event celebrating the 120th anniversary of the Olympics as revived by Baron de Coubertin known as the “father of modern day Olympics” is being held on Father’s Day starting and ending at Valletta Waterfront,” commented Valletta Cruise Port’s CEO Stephen Xuereb.

Applications are readily available at the offices of the Malta Olympic Committee at the National Pool Complex in Msida, as well as online on www.nocmalta.org. Registration is also accepted on the day of the run between 07.00 and 07.40am.

Valletta Cruise Port teams up with Tomasina Cat Sanctuary

20 April 2016

As part of its corporate social responsibility programme, Valletta Cruise Port has teamed up with Tomasina Cat Sanctuary to find a home for 8 cats which were abandoned at Valletta Waterfront in 2015. Volunteers at Tomasina have successfully caught these cats which were visited by a vet and underwent a deworming, vaccination and neutering program. The cats are now available for homing.

“It is indeed a pity that these cats were irresponsibly dumped outside at the mercy of the elements, often risking being injured or killed by passing vehicles. As the company operating one of Malta’s leading entertainment destinations, set in a historical backdrop, and a key stakeholder in the local cruise liner industry, Valletta Cruise Port’s role goes beyond that of enhancing the Valletta Waterfront experience. We feel compelled to ensure that these loveable creatures are well-looked after, and given the opportunity to find a loving home. We really appreciate the dedication and support of the team at Tomasina Cat Sanctuary particularly considering the limited resources available to them,” commented Valletta Cruise Port’s CEO Stephen Xuereb.

Tomasina Cat Sanctuary is a non-profit organisation formed in 1990 and working in aid of stray cats. It hosts about 350 cats and is entirely dependent on fundraising, and volunteer support. Throughout the year, the Luqa sanctuary actively looks for committed volunteers who can dedicate a few hours per week in caring for the cats, and helping with general site maintenance. Financial help is also required to cover the running expenses of the sanctuary and capital costs. The general public can sponsor a cat or become a member of the sanctuary.

Donations to Tomasina Cat Sanctuary can be effected via PayPal through www.tomasinasanctuary.org.
