Security & Safety

Port safety and security is a key aspect in all Mediterranean ports and the risk management of these elements are given their due importance at the Port of Valletta.

Security Management is a cross-functional practice for the cruise port with the implementation of essential components relating to Cruise and Terminal Services in order to prevent adverse consequences that may directly and indirectly have a detrimental effect in the day-to-day operational activities.

Valletta Cruise Port has made significant investments in safety, including investment in infrastructure, technology, policies and procedures and with constant on-going personnel training.

Valletta Cruise Port along with other entities helps to ensure the safe entry and exit from the port of any vessel, plus a secure stay whilst in the Port of Valletta. Deterrents have been implemented against unlawful acts such as terrorism, theft, sabotage and other such events.

Valletta Cruise Port’s facilities are fully compliant with the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code) and other relevant Port Security Regulations.

Due to increased security, travellers should allow additional time to both check in and to pass through the security clearance points. Whilst these measures may prove to be an inconvenience for some passengers, the safety and security of all passengers is of the highest priority.

A number of safety procedures apply:

• Photo identification for persons over 16 years of age may be requested.
• Passengers travelling with children must have appropriate identification verifying that the child is under their direct responsibility.
• No guest visitors will be permitted aboard any vessel.
• Only ticketed passengers will be allowed past the security checkpoints.
• Passengers and hand-carried items may be subject to searches.

Common sense and diligence on the passenger’s side is also very important for his/her own safety.

Valletta Cruise Port is in the process of implementing an Environmental Risk Management System (ERMS). The environmental and conservation policy is in compliance with ISO 14001:2015, which is a baseline requirement for almost all national and international “green port” accreditations.

Phase 1 of the ERMS project is now complete and included among other deliverables:

• All existing and related work;
• Inventory of legal and regulatory interfaces;
• Survey of all port facilities;
• List and evaluate suppliers;
• List key customer groups;
• Draft initial ERMS and risk register; and
• The creation of inventory of environmental aspects.

An Environmental Committee or ‘green team’ made up of leadership team members and employees will be established to assist and offer advice in support of the environmental direction of Valletta Cruise Port.

The next steps in Phases 2 and 3 are to build on the basic ERMS that has been established.

Furthermore Valletta Cruise Port is a signatory to the UNWTO Private Sector Commitment to the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, a frame of reference for responsible and sustainable tourism development as endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2001. The port has also integrated Onshore Power Supply (OPS), a €49.9 million initiative spearheaded by the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects, Infrastructure Malta, and Transport Malta, which provides shore-to-ship connectivity across five main quays to drastically reduce emissions and improve local air quality.
